Record Store Day: a celebration of a once-dying phenomenon

The wonder of vinyl is celebrated on internationally-recognised Record Store Day on April 21.Eleven years on, the internationally recognised Record Store Day began as campaign to save what was thought to be a dying phenomenon –buying physical music products. Now it marks as a celebration of a turnaround in sales, seeing vinyls –and cassettes and cds –make a resurgence.

The worldwide event has grown to such an extent that bands and labels release limited edition records created to mark the day.

Is there a participating store near you?In the Illawarra, David Bowie and Led Zeppelin are tipped to be the carrots leading music enthusiasts to queue outside record stores on Saturday.

Special releases and live music will be found at four local stores –Franks Wild Years and Urge in Thirroul;Johnny The Fox in Kiama; and Music Farmers in Wollongong.

“There have been Bowie releases most years for Record Store Day and they’ve always proved one of the most popular. There is a lot of his catalogue that has been hard to get and recordings previously unreleased so the fans love that,” Jeb Taylor of Music Farmers Wollongong said.
