Hamilton Business Chamber disappointed that Newcastle bus changes don’t include Beaumont Street route

Newcastle bus operator Keolis Downer announced changes to its new timetable this week.Changes to theNewcastle and Lake Macquarie bus timetable have been welcomed, but the reshuffle hasn’t left everyone satisfied.

TheNewcastle Heraldrevealed on Friday that Keolis Downer–the city’s bus operator–willintroduce new direct services on July 29 in response to community feedbacksince it launched anew timetable in January.

Anger over the new timetablesparked public protests, a communitymeeting that attracted about 1000 people and a debate in state parliament in recent months.

While the changes announced this week includedirect services between Cardiff, Macquarie Hills and Kotara and from south eastern Lake Macquarie to Charlestown–as well asimproved connections elsewhere–no services were earmarked for busy retail and dining hub Beaumont Street,which is no longer part of a route.

Hamilton Business Chamber president Nathan Errington said he was“very, very disappointed” there was no mention of Beaumont Street.

“After collecting 2000 signatures and also having them at our networking breakfast to listen to feedback, nothing happened,” he said.

Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp, who has been a vocal critic of the newtimetable, said he“cautiously” welcomed the changes.

“The devil is always in the detail and I will be examining the changes very closely,” he said.

“Disappointingly, there has been no mention of changes for key areas in the Newcastle electorate like Beaumont Street, Hamilton or for key employers like Access Industries.”
