But closer to home this weekend, Black Diamond AFL clubs Warners Bay and Cardiff have combined forces to start their own commemoration.

The Bulldogs and Hawks will host a ceremony, featuring Cardiff RSL sub-branch,at Feighan Oval before Saturday’s third-round fixture.

A trophy and man-of-the-match award will also be on offer.

“It will be a special day,” Warners Bay coach Marty Reiman said.

“Both of the clubs have worked well together to get this across the line. Moving forward it’s something we would like to do every year and maybe even play it on Anzac Day.”

Reiman will be withoutkey Bulldogs such as injured duo Jack Hardman (groin) andJake Roach (hamstring).

Weddings have also stretched selections in the early partsof season 2018 with skipper Nick Turner away on his honeymoon after tying the knot in round one while assistant coach Jeremy Buckley has nuptials in New Zealand on Saturday.

“We’ve got a stack of blokes out, most of our starting midfield and ruckman, which has made it difficult,” Reiman said.

“But it does give a lot of young guys an opportunity and the best thing is, they’re young and quick.”

Sixteen-year-old debutant Cooper Garrett is one of those to get a chance for Warners Bay this weekend.

It will be a big test for the Bulldogs, who have split their opening two results so farthis season, hostingundefeated grand finalists Cardiff.

“They are the benchmark at the moment,” Reiman said.

“We have come up with a plan to beat them but we know we’regoing to have to be at our best.”
